Exterior of 1113 Catherine Street
Description
This Shotgun home has a lot of history. Most of the homes in Old Town are older than the city records of 1933 because all the records were lost in a fire in 1933, so all the old homes are dated 1933. The reason this home is called a shotgun home is the layout was designed for air flow, with the bedrooms all to one side you would open the front and rear doors and the air would flow straight thru the home cooling all the rooms As the story goes this was one of the first homes in Key West to have a well and access in the kitchen. The local fisherman would pull up by the little kitchen window on Varela Street on their way out to fish and the nice lady would fill their water containers and pass them out the window to the fishermen. This home has the original layout with the bedrooms all to one side, the large covered porch, the large windows to let in the light and the tall ceilings. We love the original Dade County pine walls in the living room. Come see the history!
